First Regatta of 2017
We finally made it to Miami!
After some delays and an unexpected stop-over in Toronto, Erik (my coach) and I landed in Miami yesterday just after noon. We got right down to the boat park to unload and set up my laser. We spent that afternoon getting everything race ready: polishing the hull and foils, replacing some line, taping the spars, and checking out new sails. Today we got our first on the water session in.
By 1pm the wind had filled to a nice 5-7 knots, and we went for a sail. After some tuning we found a small group of other radials setting up a race course and joined in for some practice races. It was a tight little fleet consisting of the Belgian team, a Swiss girl, an Argentinian, the Belarus sailor, an Italian, and me. It felt great to get some competitive racing in right away, and I had some good moments: great boat speed on the upwinds and good starts. I found that on the downwinds high mode on starboard was the fast point of sail, but I wasn’t getting into the groove as much as the other girls, so after the racing Erik and I worked on that for a long downwind on our way back to shore.
I’m feeling better about my speed now and am excited to get more sailing in! Our plan is to be training on the water for the next three days if the weather cooperates, then to have a day off on Monday before racing begins on the 24th.
I will try to keeping posting here, and also check out my instagram (linked on the menu bar at the bottom of my website) for more photos throughout the week.
